From Entrepreneurship to Security Leadership

Betty Wilson didn’t start her career in security — she built and operated multiple businesses before ever stepping into the industry. After a major life transition, she was introduced to security by chance and quickly discovered it was a natural fit.

Within just a short time, she moved from working as a security officer to taking on sales responsibilities, leveraging her background in business development and operations. Over the past 30 years, she has built a reputation for delivering results, developing teams, and driving growth through consistency and hard work.

Her journey highlights an important truth: strong leadership skills transfer across industries — but success still requires learning the craft from the ground up.

Why Discipline and Accountability Drive Performance

One of the defining themes in Betty’s leadership style is discipline.

She runs a structured operation with clear expectations for her team. Officers are expected to stay focused, follow procedures, and maintain professionalism at all times. Distractions, lack of attention, or poor behavior are addressed quickly.

As she explains, security is not a passive job:

| “Security officers can get into situations just like police officers can… if you’re not paying attention, that could get you hurt.”

This mindset reinforces that security is about responsibility — not just presence. By setting high standards and holding people accountable, she creates consistency across her operations.

Sales, Relationships, and Building Trust

Before stepping into leadership, Betty spent years in sales — and that experience continues to shape her approach today.

Early on, she built her client base through cold calls, in-person visits, and persistence. She focused on industries with clear security needs, including construction sites, apartments, and commercial properties.

But what set her apart wasn’t just effort — it was how she built relationships.

| “You have to love people… I don’t have a problem talking to a stranger.”

She emphasizes that trust and communication are the foundation of long-term contracts. Rather than simply providing guards, she works closely with clients to understand expectations, develop post orders, and refine operations over time.

In her view, communication isn’t optional — it’s what makes the business work.

The Reality of Complex Security Operations

As her career progressed, Betty moved into more demanding environments — including hospital security.

Unlike simpler contracts, hospitals require a high level of coordination, awareness, and responsibility. Officers must manage emergencies, support medical staff, control access points, and respond to critical incidents in real time.

| “There’s a lot involved… it’s not just walking around and scanning buttons.”

These environments highlight the difference between basic coverage and true operational execution. Success depends on training, communication, and leadership — not just staffing levels.

Leading Teams and Retaining Good People

Betty’s leadership approach extends beyond structure — it also includes taking care of her team.

She invests time in training managers and supervisors directly, ensuring expectations are clear from the top down. At the same time, she stays actively involved in day-to-day operations, responding quickly to issues and maintaining visibility across accounts.

Retention, in her view, comes down to respect and honesty.

| “When your company respects you and you’re being done right, you’re gonna keep them.”

She also highlights the importance of showing appreciation — through recognition, communication, and company culture — to keep teams engaged and committed.
