From Law Enforcement Roots to the LASD Academy
Long before Chris Anderson entered the academy, law enforcement was already part of his life. His father served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, and Chris spent much of his childhood around deputies, patrol stories, and airport hangars filled with off-duty law enforcement pilots.
That early exposure led him into the LASD Explorer program before eventually entering the academy in 1988. According to Chris, the Explorer Academy was almost harder than the real thing.
| “The academy was tough. The biggest part for me was the physical side and staying on top of the academics,” he said.
After graduating, Chris worked custody assignments before transitioning into patrol at Carson Station during one of the most intense periods in Los Angeles County history. Gang violence, crack cocaine, and drive-by shootings defined much of policing during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Despite the pressure, Chris described the profession as something he genuinely loved.
| “If you’re not helping people, then you’re not doing the job.”
But behind the pride of wearing the uniform came constant stress, pressure to perform, and the weight of carrying both the department’s reputation and his family name.
The Personal Losses That Changed Everything
A lifelong aviation enthusiast, Chris had grown up flying experimental aircraft with his father. In a tragic twist, the aircraft involved in the accident was one Chris himself frequently flew.
| “I was supposed to be in that airplane,” he recalled.
At the time, Chris was participating in the Baker to Vegas relay race with Carson Station when he received the news. Rather than immediately leaving, he chose to finish his run — something he now connects to the pressure and expectations he carried from childhood.
Within a relatively short period, Chris also lost his mother and grandfather. Those losses fundamentally changed the way he viewed both life and law enforcement.
| “It took the fun out of being a cop,” he admitted.
For the first time, he began questioning whether he wanted to spend the rest of his life inside a career built around stress, danger, and constant pressure.
| “For the very first time I realized that life is too short. Is this what I want to do? I’m free of having to be under Bob Anderson”
That realization eventually led him toward entrepreneurship — even though leaving LASD was one of the hardest decisions he ever made.
Leaving LASD and Building a Security Business From Scratch
Transitioning from deputy sheriff to business owner was far from smooth.
Chris entered the private security industry without a college degree, formal business training, or outside investors. What he did have was firsthand operational experience and a willingness to learn every aspect of the business himself.
Starting with patrol services and parking enforcement contracts, Chris worked directly in the field while learning sales, dispatch, payroll, maintenance coordination, and client management. He often wore multiple hats at once — operating patrol cars during the day while handling customer service and business operations at night.
One of the biggest discoveries during those years was how important parking management was to multifamily housing communities.
| “Parking was the number one and two issue why residents moved out,” Chris explained.
That operational challenge became the foundation for many of the systems he would later build.
Over time, Chris developed multiple security and parking management companies, learning painful lessons along the way about staffing, collections, cash flow, and work-life balance.
| “I starved, destroyed my credit, because nobody paid me,” he said candidly.
The demands of entrepreneurship also affected his personal life. Throughout the episode, Chris repeatedly emphasized how difficult it can be for security company owners to separate work from family life in a 24/7 industry.
| “It’s 24 7. Not only with your clients, but with your people and with the problems, it does not shut down.”
The Evolution of Security Reporting Technology
As Chris continued managing parking and security operations, he recognized a major industry problem: most reporting systems were still paper-based, inefficient, and difficult for both officers and clients to use.
What began as parking and incident tracking eventually evolved into one of the industry’s earliest real-time reporting platforms.
| “It started with parking, went to incident management, then maintenance,” Chris explained.
After years of growth and operational development, Chris eventually sold the company. But over time, he became disappointed with the direction it was taking and increasingly disconnected from the customer-focused approach that originally made the platform successful.
“It wasn’t just a software program. It has to work. You have to be able to support it and you have to understand the industry.”
Those experiences eventually helped shape Vision InSites and its approach to real-time reporting, operational efficiency, and communication within private security operations.
For Chris, the goal was never simply to create another reporting tool.
| “We became a data company, not just a reporting solution.”
Chris Anderson’s Biggest Lessons on Leadership, Integrity, and Business
As the conversation wrapped up, the interview shifted away from software and business growth toward something more personal: perspective.
After decades in law enforcement and entrepreneurship, Chris repeatedly returned to one core idea — integrity matters more than titles, revenue, or technology.
| “In our line of work, integrity is everything,” LaVonce Jeffrey said while agreeing with Chris’s perspective.
Chris also spoke openly about burnout, failed relationships, therapy, and the emotional cost that often comes with leadership roles in both public safety and private security.
Rather than presenting himself as someone who has everything figured out, Chris framed many of his experiences as lessons for the next generation of security professionals and business owners.
| “I can tell people what not to do because I’ve already done it,” Chris says.
Today, Chris uses those experiences to share operational advice, leadership lessons, and industry insight through both Vision InSites and The Anderson Brief.
At its core, the conversation was less about technology and more about resilience — learning how to adapt through failure, pressure, loss, and reinvention while continuing to move forward.
