From Security Officer to Police Chief
Kendrick Sadler didn’t start his career in law enforcement—he started in private security, working challenging properties and learning firsthand what it takes to manage real-world risk. That early exposure shaped his perspective and ultimately led him toward a career in policing.
After serving in the Marine Corps and gaining leadership experience, Sadler transitioned into law enforcement, where he steadily worked his way up through the ranks. Over a 24-year career, he served in patrol, K9, investigations, and executive leadership before becoming Chief of Police.
That progression highlights a key reality for both industries: strong leadership is built over time through experience, not titles.
Leadership Lessons from the Streets
Throughout the conversation, Sadler emphasizes that the most valuable leadership lessons didn’t come from a desk—they came from the field.
| “I got better response and cooperation from people when I treated them with respect and dignity… you’d be surprised that when you treat people with that respect and decency and treat ’em like a human, they’re more likely to cooperate.”
Experience taught him that communication is often more effective than force. As his career progressed, he shifted from a rigid, command-based approach to one focused on de-escalation and relationship-building.
That mindset is just as critical in private security as it is in policing. Professionals who can communicate effectively are far more likely to prevent incidents before they escalate.
Inside K9 Operations and Officer Safety
One of the most compelling parts of Sadler’s career was his time as a K9 handler—a role he describes as the most rewarding of his time in law enforcement.
K9 units are more than just a tactical advantage. They are a critical tool for improving officer safety and resolving high-risk situations more efficiently. Whether tracking suspects or assisting in apprehensions, properly trained K9 teams reduce the need for officers to enter dangerous environments alone.
| “Those are situations that you would have to send an officer into… whereas you can send that dog down there and even if he doesn’t bite, he can alert and let you know exactly where he is.”
However, Sadler makes it clear that success in K9 operations comes down to control, discipline, and training—not aggression. The best handlers are those who can manage their dogs with precision and restraint.
The Reality of Modern Policing and Community Impact
Policing has evolved significantly over the course of Sadler’s career. Early challenges in Oceanside included gang activity, drug crime, and prostitution, all of which required coordinated strategies to address.
Rather than relying solely on enforcement, long-term improvements came through collaboration—both within departments and with the community.
| “How the community and the police department working together collaboratively makes the community safer.”
This shift toward community-based solutions is something Sadler believes is essential for both public law enforcement and private security providers. Sustainable results don’t come from reacting to problems—they come from understanding and addressing root causes.
Bringing Law Enforcement Experience into Private Security
After retiring from law enforcement, Sadler launched Faithful Security Services with a clear mission: go beyond traditional security models.
Many security programs still rely heavily on “observe and report,” but today’s environments demand more. Clients expect proactive solutions, better communication, and real accountability.
| “We don’t want to just be the next company that slides in there and tries to figure it out. We actually want to go in there and solve those problems.”
His approach focuses on:
- Collaboration with local law enforcement and community groups
- Training in de-escalation and communication
- Providing broader services like investigations, executive protection, and assessments
This reflects a broader shift in the industry—security companies are increasingly expected to operate as strategic partners, not just coverage providers.
What Security Professionals Need to Focus On
For those currently working in security or considering a transition into law enforcement, Sadler offers practical advice grounded in experience.
Strong communication skills are at the top of the list. The ability to speak clearly, write accurate reports, and interact professionally with the public can make or break a career.
He also stresses the importance of understanding your role. Security professionals are not law enforcement, but they play a critical role in prevention and early intervention.
| “Learn how to work in collaboration with people around you to help you solve those problems that you’re dealing with.”
Those who can think beyond basic responsibilities and focus on solutions will stand out—and advance.
