From Marine Corps Discipline to Business Structure

Joe spent 20 years in the Marine Corps. During that time, structure was not optional. Accountability was constant. Leadership was visible.

That foundation shaped how he approaches business.

As Joe explains,

| “The structure is the key to that. Having the right managers, the right people, or the seats in the bus.”

In both combat and business, clarity drives performance. When roles are defined and expectations are enforced, teams move with confidence. However, when structure breaks down, even capable people struggle.

For security operators, this lesson is critical. Growth without structure leads to chaos. Growth with structure creates stability.

Why Security Companies Struggle to Scale

Many security companies hit a ceiling between $5–15 million in revenue. At that stage, the owner is often still acting as CEO, COO, and CFO.

Joe saw this repeatedly in his consulting career.

| “It’s hard to scale a company when you don’t have either effective partnering or you don’t have the proper organizational structure,”

As revenue increases, complexity increases. Payroll becomes heavier. Compliance becomes stricter. Client expectations rise. Because of this, leadership depth must grow alongside revenue.

Otherwise, growth turns into stress.

Eventually, the business owner stops sleeping. Decision fatigue sets in. Meanwhile, culture begins to erode. At that point, scaling feels like survival instead of success.

Culture Is Retention — Not a Slogan

In security leadership, culture is often misunderstood. It is not a mission statement on a website. Instead, culture shows up in whether your best people stay.

| “If your talented, very capable employees don’t feel good about working in that operation, they’re gonna go elsewhere.”

In private security, turnover is expensive. Officers work independently. Supervisors are stretched. Clients notice inconsistency quickly.

However, when leadership is visible and managers are competent, retention improves. As a result, performance stabilizes. Clients experience fewer disruptions. Growth becomes sustainable instead of reactive.

Security leadership and business growth are inseparable from culture.

Sales, Structure, and Asking Better Questions

Before entering the security industry, Joe worked in national management consulting. There, he learned a powerful lesson about sales.

| “the questions are the answer.”

Rather than leading with a pitch, Joe focused on diagnosing problems. In many cases, companies lacked organizational clarity or financial discipline. Once those weaknesses were identified, the solution became obvious.

In security, the same principle applies.

When operators understand a client’s operational pain points — whether it’s accountability gaps, reporting inconsistencies, or management overload — trust increases. Consequently, the conversation shifts from price to value.

Credibility closes more contracts than aggressive selling.

Scaling the Right Way in Private Security

Growth through acquisition has become common in the security industry. Yet Joe has seen firsthand how rapid expansion can damage client relationships if leadership does not keep pace.

| “If you’re not scaling, you’re not selling, you’re going backwards.”

Still, scaling must be intentional.

At first, expansion looks impressive. However, overloaded account managers and weak internal systems eventually expose cracks. Without financial stability and operational structure, new contracts become liabilities instead of assets.

Security leadership and business growth demand infrastructure before expansion. Strong supervision, clear reporting systems, and disciplined financial management must come first. Only then can scale create momentum rather than burnout.

Lessons for Today’s Security Operators

Joe’s journey from Marine Corps drill instructor to security executive reinforces a simple truth: leadership is not theoretical.

It is daily. It is visible. It is structural.

Because private security is operationally intensive, companies cannot grow on personality alone. Instead, they must build systems that support people, protect culture, and reinforce accountability at every level.

Ultimately, security leadership and business growth depend on one core principle: put the right people in the right roles — and give them the structure to succeed.
